A surprise visit

Everything I posted in the last week has been written during the previous weekend. I scheduled the posts to appear every second day. On Tuesday morning I kissed Joe goodbye and flew to New York. It was my first trip to another continent.

Every seven years I take my mom on a trip abroad. No special reason for that: just some mother-son bonding. The older I get, the higher my salary, and the further we go. This trip to Manhattan was great fun and we have seen and done a lot. It also gave me the opportunity to bring a surprise visit to a friend I never met (see The friend I never met). After having known Rick online for many years, he turned out to be exactly the same person in real life.

This morning I got home and read the many comments on my posts about Joe, and I really appreciate all the input. There's more to it, however, and I'd like to get your feedback on the next post.

I bet I'm not the only one who doesn't get the picture.

IT'S THE 'BIG APPLE' PEOPLE!

there!

Sam,

In fact, the picture with the Goldfinger post was a very subtle reference to my prospective trip. The Dali painting is found in the Museum of Modern Art where we would spend a lot of time -- without the melting sex toys though that were approrpiate for that post.

You are only a 2 hour plane flight away to my lovely city of Pittsburgh!!

You didn't see one of those "Welcome to the United States of America. President: George W. Bush" signs that some airports haven't taken down yet, did you? God, it's so embarrassing! :P

BTW, how did you like the big apple?

And strange that you chose a green apple for your pic. I've always imagined a red one.

It's actually really like the big green ceramic apple in your bedroom beside the tv ;)

Awaiting the next post eagerly...

Wow! NY :(

Actually, the original "big apple" was a Newtown Pippin, which was first discovered in what became NYC in the mid 18th Century. It is still grown around here, mostly used for cider. It was something like the Granny Smith, and it is green/yellow. I can't imagine Jack actually knew this, since almost no New Yorkers do - but, as usual, he's right.

Sam,

Finally, after almost a year of blogging someone commented on a picture instead of the text! I like that, because, as you know, I'm quite religious about those pictures.

Jeff,

I'm certainly returning to the US. One of my plans is to travel from coast to coast by motorcycle. If I do, then I will certainly visit Pittsburgh, that is, is you will show us around.

Ryan,

None of those signs at Newark Airport. But, the scenery in the train ride from the airport to Manhattan was about the most depressing one I've ever seen. In fact, so it was so depressing that it was beautiful in itself. I took loads of pictures from the train and the locals thought I was crazy.

Orange,

I will do a post on my trip to Manhattan. ;)

Sam,

I didn't think of that, but indeed my ceramic, green, big apple -- made in Brazil -- is just like that.

Rick,

Why do people always include 'as usual' or 'as always' when they say I'm right? The apple was indeed a lucky guess.

Jack, you get it! Everybody looks at me like I'm crazy when I say that that stuff is beautiful. My favorite place in the city is where the Manhattan Bridge meets The Bowery, with all the banks with their names written in Chinese. At sunset, when the sky and all the concrete glows orange, it has this great Post-Apocalyptic Victorian vibe to it, which I love. :)

Ryan,

Been there at sunset and I agree. :)
